SSC Seasonal Foods

In our cooking lessons the children have been learning about food that is grown, reared, caught and processed.

They tried a range of seasonal UK foods and evaluated them.

The Ladybird class have enjoyed reading Julia Donaldson books this term to learn about rhyming words.

The children have loved reading Room on the Broom.

They have enjoyed making magic potions, dressing up as witches and writing their own rhyming spells.

Voice Box Joke Competition

Pupils across the whole school have been heard having fun with language during our Voice Box joke-telling competition. The event has raised awareness of the need to develop communication skills and confidence. Pupils and staff voted for Gorseland’s funniest joke at today’s class meeting – can you guess what it is?

Tree Planting

Today, children across the school planted 450 trees around the school grounds. The children attached handmade labels to their tree so they can remember which tree is there’s once they grow up.

Big Soup Share in Year 7

The Year 7s participated brilliantly in our Big Soup Share this week and have developed their understanding of how produce can be locally sourced. Having harvested the vegetables from our allotment and garden areas,
the pupils walked safely to Tesco where they located and purchased the remaining ingredients needed for our recipes. The pupils then improved their kitchen knife skills while making leek and potato soup, flatbreads, dips and apple crumble. Our shared learning event with family members included preparing the allotment for planting again, completing our remembrance garden projects and creating decorations for our tree dressing challenge. We then enjoyed our shared lunch and the pupils said how happy and proud they felt knowing they had been fully involved in preparing our lunch.

A big thank you to everyone who was able to share this experience with us!

Fantastic start for Falcon Class!

The Year 7 pupils in Falcon Class have settled in well and are really enjoying completing STEM challenges each morning to develop their communication, teamwork, thinking and problem solving skills. They have created domino runs, explored different uses for construction materials, created various cup towers (including with chopsticks!), followed paper aeroplane designs before testing and adapting them, and constructed then developed marble runs. What a fantastic start to each day! The Year 7s will be working towards their CREST award over the next few weeks – watch this space.

Our Wonderful Garden

In our gardening lesson the children have been busy harvesting the produce from our garden.

The children have enjoyed observing how the garden had grown and changed over the Summer and into the Autumn.

We even had some visitors……

Unfortunately the caterpillars ate our entire broccoli plant.
